Apricot Kernel Oil (Prunus armeniaca)

This nourishing oil is cold-pressed from dried apricot seeds. Apricot kernel oil is rich in fatty acids and vitamins A, C and E. It is readily absorbed by the skin without leaving a greasy residue.

Arnica Oil (Arnica cordifolia)

This is our favorite plant for swelling, inflammation and bruises...it's amazing. The constituents in Arnica help stimulate and dilate blood vessels near the surface of the skin which can improve circulation to the treatment area and speed healing. Arnica is used externally for sore muscles, sprains, bruises, arthritic pain and swelling due to fractures. We venture to southern BC every summer to collect this little beauty. A field of flowering Arnica is a feast for the senses!

Beeswax

Sol Nowitz is one of the few bee keepers in our area who raises bees without the use of any chemicals. These efforts help keep our local honey bees naturally mite resistent. Sol filters our beeswax by heating it in a small cold frame with only the heat of the sun, leaving it alive, fragrant and of the highest quality. We use it as a base for all of our salves and Lip Balms.

Birch Oil (Betula spp.)

Birch is a natural pain reliever containing salicin, the active compound found in aspirin. Salicin relieves inflammation and pain associated with arthritis, gout and general muscle pain. It also deters the body's production of prostaglandins that are linked to inflammation and pain. Birch works especially well with other anti-inflammatory herbs like arnica and poplar bud.

Blackberry Leaf (Rubus discolor)

Black Walnut Leaves & Bark(Juglans nigra)

A little used remedy, black walnut is a powerful antifungal. It is also high in potassium, calcium, iron, and other building nutrients needed by damaged and worn out cells.

Burdock Root (Arctium lappa)

We use burdock for its blood cleansing and liver-stimulating properties. This herb is loaded wit. vitamins and minerals and is often used to treat liver and digestive problems, urinary tract infections, ulcers, eczema, psoriasis and to boost energy and stamina. This gentle but effective herb works best when used regularly over time.

Calendula Flower (Calendula officinalis)

This cheerful orange and yellow flower has amazing healing properties and can be safely used wherever there is inflammation, both external and internal. We include the dried flowers in our Belly Balm Tea to help with inflammation of the digestive tract, as with stomach ulcers and heartburn. This little flower is extremely easy to grow in the west coast garden and will produce blossoms all summer and into the fall.

Calendula Oil (Calendula officinalis)

In addition to having amazing anti-inflammatory properties, Calendula also stimulates the production of collagen at wound sites which can help minimize scarring. It can be used for disinfecting and treating minor wounds, cuts, scrapes, chapped or chafed skin, eczema, psoriasis, bruises, burns, acne, bee stings, diaper rashes, and other minor irritations and infections of the skin. It is by far the best, most reliable, all-around healing plant that we grow in our garden!

Carrot Seed Essential Oil (Daucus carota)

This essential oil is used to rejuvenate dry, mature, and wrinkled skin. It helps remove toxins from skin, is a cell proliferant, and is beneficial for a variety of skin conditions including dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, rashes, and skin irritations.

Chamomile (Matricaria recutita)

We include dried chamomile flowers in our Belly Balm Tea blend for their anti-inflammatory, sedative, stomach-soothing and antispasmodic properties. This plant is used for colic, indigestion, gas, bloating, heartburn and relaxation. Some people suffering from peptic ulcers find relief from drinking chamomile tea. CAUTION: Chamomile may cause allergic reactions in people sensitive to ragweed or other plants in the Asteraceae family.

Chamomile flowers used topically are great for reducing inflammation and itchiness from skin rashes, bug bites and hives. Chamomile is an annual plant that generously reseeds itself and produces new blossoms throughout the summer for us to dry for tea or make into oil for salves.

Cocoa Butter (Theobroma cacao)

A sensual aromatic butter pressed from the seeds of the Cacao tree. Cocoa butter is a luxuriously moisturizing oil that melts at body temperature. It is rich in antioxidants and vitamin E and has been used to heal and moisturize skin that has been exposed to the elements.

Dried Coltsfoot leaves are commonly used in tea for coughs and upper-respiratory problems like asthma, bronchitis, laryngitis, emphysema and smoking related lung irritations. The antispasmodic and sedative effects of Coltsfoot are soothing to the respiratory system because they help block nerve impulses that initiate coughing. It also contains mucilage which coats and soothes the throat.

Comfrey Oil (Symphytum officinalis)

Comfrey is an amazing local herb that is used to soothe skin and speed wound healing. We use a traditional combination of dried root and leaf in our oil.

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinalis)

Dandelion is used as a potent diuretic, digestive and detoxifying herb. We include this versatile “wild” plant in three different tea blends for its nutritional value and anti-inflammatory properties. We harvest and dry the flowers in early spring for their excellence in treating colds, flu and fever (especially in their earliest stages). They can also help to treat uncomfortable inflammation of the upper respiratory system from seasonal allergies and sinus congestion.

We collect this majestic purple flower in the summer at beautiful sub-alpine locations throughout Vancouver Island. Fireweed is used for its mild laxative, diuretic and anti-inflammatory benefits. This herb works best when combined with the other select cleansing herbs of our Clari Tea blend.

This is an odourless, non-allergenic oil extracted from grape seeds. It contains the antioxidant Pycnogenol, which has an anti-aging effect on the skin. It is light and absorbs easily in to the skin.

Green Clay (French)

French Green Clay absorbs and removes impurities from the skin and stimulates blood flow to create healthy and glowing skin. When prepared as a mask, the clay dries on the skin causing pores to tighten and the skin to feel firm, toned and refreshed. In a pinch, you could also use the Clay Mask in poultices to treat arthritis, sore muscles, sprains, cuts, bruises, insect bites, stings, and minor burns.

Our beekeeping friend has hives in our backyard and around our neighborhood. This is as local as it gets. He does not use any chemicals on his bees, and tends to them with meticulous care producing an amazing quality honey from the nectar of our garden herbs. Honey has moisturizing, anti-aging, soothing, and healing properties. Honey contains natural enzymes, antioxidants, flavonoids and antibacterial agents.

Jojoba Oil (Simmondsia chinensis)

A cold pressed oil made from the beans of the Jojoba plant. Jojoba oil is actually a liquid plant wax with absorption properties similar to our skin’s own sebum. Because of this, it is great for all skin types and readily absorbs into skin and moisturizes without feeling greasy or oily. It is also anti-inflammatory which is why we add it to our healing Lip Balms.

Juniper Oil (Juniperus communis)

Juniper's spicy berries have amazing anti-inflammatory action. This is a multi-talented oil with many applications. It's calming scent makes it an excellent tonic for anxiety. It is also widely used for various respiratory problems including throat infections, flu, cough, cold, sinus congestion and bronchitis.

A beautiful addition to our garden, this versatile herb is a new addition to some of our tea blends. It is used primarily for inflammations of the digestive system, as well as for bronchitis and irritating coughs.

Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria)

This is a lovely perennial that grows in our garden. We include it in our Belly Balm Tea blend for its unique ability to soothe and protect the lining of the digestive system. It also helps in decreasing the production of stomach acid, making it great for indigestion, heartburn, gastric and peptic ulcers and nausea.

Mullein Leaf (Verbascum thapsus)

Most of our mullein comes from our local community garden, where it has sneaked into some of the garden beds. Mullein is an excellent lung and respiratory remedy and we include it for its ability to reduce inflammation and facilitate phlegm expulsion. Mullein is traditionally used to treat bronchitis, hard coughs, sore throats, and for rebuilding lung tissue following a long illness or after quitting smoking. Also find mullein in our BFC Salve for it's ability to heal and nourish the glands of the body.

Nettle Leaf (Urtica dioica)

Our namesake plant is our favorite local wild green. Nettles are known as one of the most nutritious greens on the planet. Nettles are a Vancouver Island “super-food” rich in nutrients, vitamins and minerals. They are great for the skin and for treating psoriasis and eczema. Nettles also have antihistamine properties for treating and preventing classic allergy symptoms. As a spring tonic and blood cleanser, they help with the inflammation of arthritis, gout, kidney and bladder irritations.

Oatstraw (Avena sativa)

A beautiful herb to include in the garden, we love putting patches of oats throughout our garden beds. Oats are one of the best remedies to “feed” the nervous system, especially when under stress. They are high in calcium and other nutrients making them useful as a remedy for skin conditions and as a general strengthener. Oats are gluten free.

Olive Oil (Olea europaea)

Extra virgin olive oil, the most pure form of olive oil, is created by pressing the juice from the olive fruit. It is high in fatty acids, vitamin E and other vitamins and minerals. Olive oil has exceptional wound-healing, anti-inflammatory and moisturizing properties and also has an amazingly long shelf life which is why we use it as a base for all of our plant oils.

Oregon Grape Root (Mahonia aquafolium)

This herb grows prolifically around Nanaimo. We collect the roots in the fall and winter. The roots contains the active ingredient berberine which is a strong bitter. This makes it an excellent herb for the liver and gall bladder. It can be used as a mild laxative in chronic constipation and also for chronic scaly skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema.

Peppermint Leaf (Mentha piperita)

Mint leaves help ease indigestion, gas, heartburn, ulcers and colic. When combined with other herbs they are great for alleviating symptoms of cold, flu and fever. We also like to include mint leaves in our teas for their fresh, uplifting flavor.

Peppermint Essential Oil (Mentha piperita)

We include this refreshing oil in some of our salves for it's ability to help with poor circulation, inflammation, and muscle pain. The aroma of this herb helps ease symptoms of headaches, exhaustion, and mental fatigue.

Poplar Bud Oil (Populus balsamifera)

We harvest the large and resinous buds in the early spring from large branches that have fallen off trees during winter storms. Poplar bud resin is one of the best local remedies for healing cuts and wounds and for soothing and protecting irritated or inflamed tissue. Nothing beats the scent of freshly budding poplars in the spring

Propolis Tincture

Propolis is another incredible gift that we glean from our local honey bees. Propolis is used in our Healing Salve to help fight infections and prevent harmful bacteria from entering wounds. Our beekeeper friend collects our propolis from the hives as he cleans and maintains them throughout the summer.

Traditionally used during pregnancy as a uterine strengthener, raspberry leaf is high in Calcium as well as many other vitamins and minerals.

Red Clover Blossoms (Trifolium pratense)

Red clover blossoms are calming and cleansing with a mild sweet flavour. Red clover can help clear up inflammatory skin conditions like acne, allergic rashes,psoriasis and eczema. This herb blends well with other cleansing herbs (like stinging nettles and dandelion) to help restore pH balance of the body.

Skullcap (Scutellaria laterifolia)

Skullcap is an ancient sleep aid remedy and helps to reduce anxiety and nervousness due to “busy mind”. This is not a sedative so can be taken during the day to help relax and calm the mind without feeling sleepy.

St. John's Wort Oil (Hypericum perforatum)

St. John's Wort flowers and leaves are covered in tiny oil glands which release when soaked in olive oil to create a vibrant and beautiful red oil. This oil is used topically for treating nerve pain, muscle pain, arthritis and gout. It is also an excellent treatment for all types of wounds, sores, cuts, burns, etc.

Vitamin E Oil

Helps to soothe, hydrate, and balance the skin. Vitamin E plays a crucial role in protecting skin cells and membranes from environmental damage. This protection extends to preventing damage to the skin from UV rays, pollutants and the effects of aging. The d-alpha-tocopherol also protects against lipid peroxidation which helps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Vitamin E is a natural preservative and we add a little bit to all of our salves and balms to help keep them fresh.

Yarrow is a versatile herb with a myriad of healing properties. We use it in Belly Balm Tea for it's bitter, warming, anti-inflammatory properties making it good for indigestion, bloating, gas and nausea. It can also be found in our Immuni Tea blend as it is an excellent immune stimulant that helps reduce both fevers and phlegm.
